Not to confuse the issue but on Windows the setup at the url below works really well, adds the gtk-sharp assemblies (as well as some others from the Mono namespace) to the GAC and allows you to get up and running Gtk# with minimal fuss:

I've had no problems so far moving the resulting programs to linux, mono-1.2.3.1.
