I've just pushed a patch that fixed the issue in a way that is consistent with the Gtk literature. Could you check that this patch still works for you? (I guess it's no more than one or two lines different from what you have in your repro.) Note that I keep the distinction between makeGObject and constructGObject. However, the latter one now always sinkRef's the object for Gtk+ > 2.10.
