An old mechanic's trick I have been using for years to keep my
fingernails clean after working on my bike is to throw a bar of soap in
water to soak for a few minutes. Then I dig my fingernails hard into
the slightly softened bar, filling the crevices under my nails with
soap. After the job is done I wash my hands thoroughly, dissolve the
soap under my nails, and life and my hands regain all their former
beauty!
