Check out Sprocket Specialists, they have a list on the web that shows exact
number of teeth. If memory serves, the front is 17 and the rear is 47.
Some riders have had custom sprockets made down to 44 teeth, which can be
done with just a rear sprocket change. No cutting of chain required (118
links on GTS.). Sprocket Specialists makes their own stuff and custom
configs are not that expensive. www.sprocketspecialists.com also look
for DID on the web too.
The front sprocket (stock) has a poly/plastic coating that appears to be
designed to cut noise/gear whine. Aftermarket sprockets do not have that.
You might check to see if a FZR1000 front can be used in 530 size. I got
the aftermarket front 530 sprocket, and the noise difference is quite
noticable at first.
Most hard-core GTSers converted to 530. The high-end 530 chains are far
cheaper than 532 due to volume. All things being equal, the 532 chain would
be stronger by maybe 5-10%. 532 came out in the early 90's, but only a
handfull of high-end bikes used it, and by 95 it seemed that 532 was no
longer being used, substituted with 530. I used a DID x-ring 530, which is
stronger than the stock 532 (also DID), and almost 1/2 the price (about $120
vs. $210 for 532). So for the cost of a 532 chain, you can get a better
530, AND front and rear sprockets. If you check the 95 and up 750/1000+
sport bikes, they use 530.
As for tires, I am using a Bridgestone BT56 in back, and a Dunlop 205 in
front. Most people seem to like the Bridgestone BT56/57 (and the newer
010/020 that replaced it). I use the stock 130/60 in front, but most people
use the 120 size instead.

Subject: Chain/Sprockets/Tires
OK,
So I'm still sort of a newbie to the GTS world. I've been loving my
'94 GTS for a month or so now, and am taking it on a 3,000 mile ride
next month. Here's a few questions for the intelligence bank;
1. What size (# teeth) are the sprockets on the GTS. Does anyone know
of a good aftermarket source for these?
2. Why did Yamaha choose a weird size chain for the GTS (532)? What do
all of you consider the best chain for this bike? Any deals out there
on chains?
3. Yes, tires - again. I see you all like the Pirelli GTS, and the
Avons. OK. So they don't make a front tire in the specified size -
130/60 ZR17. So do you all just run the more common 120/60ZR17? There
are only a few types of tires available in the 130/60 size. ???
4. Any basic tips for a long distance run? We're riding to N.Mexico
and back(to IL) - and picking up our bun burner gold Iron Butt
certificates on the way. Anyone want to take a few days off work
mid-Sept?
Thanks!
Mike H.
