Obviously someone has not read the July 2001 issue of Bike Magazine
(Europe) which tested the FJR1300, Honda Pan European, and BMW 1150RT
head-to-head... The Yamaha was selected by the 3 road testers and
blew the others away from a performance basis.. The Yamaha is a
performance oriented SPORT-touring bike (Capital S for Sport)...

Also the November 2001 issue of Cycle World gave a very good write up
on the FJR 1300 on European roads ...

Note: With the new ST1300 coming with only 116 HP at the crank and 80
flbs.of torque... and 50lbs heavier than the FJR.. it(Honda)will also
be blown away by the big FJR...

My Regards,
Digitalfoot...

Thought everyone might be interested in this. Clipped it from the ST1100

Hi All,

the German MC-rag "TOURENFAHRER" gave that Yam a walk:

- - lost panniers while riding (a plastic made sprocket mechanism
gave in; them replaced bags now have metal parts....)
- - Handlebar not adjustable
- - backpressure from adjustable w/screen leads to cramps in
    the neck/shoulder area
- - no ABS (also not announced for 2002)
- - only special dedicated tires useable (i.e. MEZ4 with
the special mark "B" for front and "J" for the rear; BT020
only with special ID "N", do not use standard tires!)
- - forks ok, except a delay in "braking loose" (which I read
as if they tend to stuck.....)
- - rear shock ok for solo riding, with 2 up hoplessly undersprung,
testers replaced it with aftermarket made by WILBERS
- - engine powerfull but rough: > 5000rpm noticable vibes,
   > 7000 handles and footpegs vibrating
- - automatic chocke keeps engine at annoying 2500rpm
equals so 40kph in first gear....
- - no headlight adjuster! Needed to take fairing off and adjust
the factory bolts (no manual for this avail)
- - RHS fairing fixed with 20(!!) bolts before releasing service
access (including access to headlight bulbs and spark plugs)
- - the FJR is a bonehead in twisties and asks for a strong hand there

hmm, when remember I the first test reports on the ST1100/Pan-European
I don't recall much, cause they didn't find much to write on the negative
sides there <bg>
OTOH: what are 50.000km for a "long-time-test"???
some of us are doing 20.000km for vacation quite frequently <g>

When you imagine that every time a construction fails, in Japanese
companys the engineers responsible for it have to do Harakiri,
Honda should still have the good number on personell avail. ;^)))

FWIW

regards

Keep tires down
