I have read that the Castrol Syntec is not a very good oil with one exception: it has a very wide viscosity range (5w-50). However this good trait wears out very quickly because it is obtained through the use of a LOT of viscosity modifiers. It also has only an average volitility rating, whereas most true synthetics have above average to very superior volitility. Also, I think the Syntec is not a true synthetic, but rather a blend like Golden Spectro.
Keep in mind that in the USA, Catrol only has about 3 types of oil for sale: The Syntec 5w-50 (has the name changed ? maybe), the GTX series of petroleum oils, and a low cost oil that is not found very often, that is even cheaper than GTX. I know in Europe there are more choices. Castrol does a lot of adverising for the do-it-yourselfers, and I am told that a lot of BMW car dealers only use Castrol. I have a non-Amsoil oil study somewhere that is somewhat dated, but has a good comparision of synthetics and non-synth, and includes a number of Castrol oils. I will try to locate it. -----Original Message----- From: Spee-dee-D [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, December 02, 2001 10:40 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Oil consumption I don't know the details Henry, other than synthetic is better than regular oil. And what you say may be true, however unless I carry a couple extra litres of it with me on trips, it's quality will be severely compromised when I am forced to buy whatever the local service station happens to sell when the bike runs low. And I'm not real keen on mixing oils. If the syntec doesn't work for me next year then I'll be forced to revert back to ordinary oil for this very reason. This is the kind of P.I.T.A. stuff I would expect from an old worn out bike, not my pampered new GTS. Very disappointing. My guess is you're much better off with Mobil 1 than the Castrol Product. Regards, Henry S.
