Andy This has happened to me, but without the downpour. Never figured out what caused it, but the solution was the same as yours, minus the starting fluid.
Point of caution - you may overheat the starter motor with prolonged cranking. (smell of hot insulation is BAD for the bike and your wallet) Bill Andy Perry <wrote> I got it started.
