Greg,

Thanks for the kind words and advice. If any mechanical problems are
discovered during the upcoming examination of my GTS's braking system
(including examination of the calipers and static testing of the ABS) then I
will be sure to let everyone know.

Unfortunately, because of what I now believe the nature of the GTS ABS
system to be, I suspect that I may never know for sure what the cause was.
I actually expect that when the system is examined that nothing will be
found to be out of spec or damaged in any way. The bike is in great shape
overall and the new ABS pump has been very pampered since it was installed a
couple of summers ago. I think that what happened to me was caused by a
burp (isn't that the technical term?) in the system. A burp that I believe
lurks in all GTS ABS systems. I would even be willing to bet at this point
that if my front brake road test was performed again that the front wheel
may not even lock. I do believe that if the road test were repeated often
enough, however, that the anomaly would show itself again. I myself am not
willing to test this theory. Maybe I'll give Donny the keys and let him
give it a try. If you knew Donny, you'd know what I mean. :^)

Thanks,
Duane

Duane,
That royally sucks. I am very sorry to hear about what happened.
Of course it could have happened to any of us.

That having been said, I think it's possible it wasn't the pump, but
instead that the caliper failed by not releasing. I don't think the pump
can add pressure, but only release it. I could definitely be wrong.

One possiblity: As the rotor wears down and the pads wear down
for the umpteenth time, it's probably possible that the piston(s) extend
past the point where they are supposed to go- thus the need to
occasionally
measure the width of the rotor with a micrometer. In such a case, they
may
not have wanted to go back into the caliper. This is something we are
supposed to check for, but honestly, I just replaced mine and didn't. I
think
I will!

At any rate, I've tested my fronts all the time and It's good to
know they work.
However, I am not likely to test them again, unless it's on some kind of
machine
or using the test coupler.

Thanks for sharing your experience; hopefully we may benefit by your
terrible experience.
