How come so many of us still call ENGINES MOTORS? > And did the word "mill" come to be a substitute fro "engine"? An engine is short for 'heat engine.' Something that takes heat and converts it to another form of energy, typically mechanical. A motor is a device that takes energy (typically electrical) and converts it into mechanical. They are related, but engine implies heat and fuel, where motor is a simple energy converter (something-> mechanical). That's my understanding.
