I've done a little research about this subject and these are the
concussions:

- The word MOTOR comes from the Latin (the old death language which used to
be talked mainly during the Roman Empire more than 2000 years ago) "motor,
motoris" and its original meaning was "what moves, what produce movement".
Other words which share same origin + meaning: MOTIVE, MOTIVATION: "what
moves or has the ability of moving something" (smthg. tangible or
intangible).

- This word is in English a Latinism. A sort of contamination of the English
language coming from Latin. Same way there are a lot of English words which
contaminate pure Romance languages, languages which come from Latin. (When I
say contaminate a mean to enrich too)

- In Spanish we have the same word to express whatever kind of engine-motor:
motor elctrico, motor de conbustin interna, motor de arranque (starter),
etc.

- Engine should be the original word for English to express this concept.

Some Romances Languages expression for motor:
Italian: motore
French: moteur
Spanish: motor

What a cultured motorbikes related mailing list!!
