Hey John, it sounds like you had a set of virgin mirrors to me! The best
way to remove a side mirror is to place one hand under it and give it a
good downward "WHACK" with the open palm of the other. To re-install the
mirror, rub a little grease or petroleum jelly on the nipples (SA's back
OFF!) and spread open the clips (on the mirror itself) a little with a pair
of needle nose pliers. Now, hold the mirror in place with everything lined
up and give it another open handed "WHACK" going inward towards the bike.
Don't be afraid, it's NOT going to break. HIT IT! You might only get one or
two clips to grab the first time, so don't move anything, just "WHACK" it
again. It's really easy once you get the hang of it.
