Re the use of Cameras in US traffic enforcement, a state gov't lawyer buddy of mine
recently advised that his state stopped using cameras (i.e., taking pictures and
mailing citations) b/c too many guys were getting pictures mailed to their houses for
their wives to open . . . seems the cameras not only took pictures of the guys
driving, but also of girlfriend's in the passenger seat. Think about it, the guy
walks in the door and his wife hands him the picture and asks who the cute woman is in
the passenger seat. Talk about collateral damage.

Most of the open roads (Interstates) are anywhere from 55-75 MPH depending
on their proximity to populous areas. As a general rule, you can go maybe 7
MPH over the posted speed without raising the ire of local
constables....but it differs from locales. In many OPEN areas of the
country (Utah, etc) you can see many miles ahead so it's difficult for them
to sneak up on you with radar and they're only lightly patroled. Other
areas, typically small towns, will sometimes setup speed traps that are
there for one reason only....revenue generation. Come to think of it, it's
ALL for revenue generation! IMHO. Cameras are not an issue right now in the
states for speeding, although we do have them for redlight runners.

Does Australia allow the use of radar detectors?

Are there speed limits in all US States? If so, how do they vary? Lots of
you talk about 80+ mph cruising..if we did that here in Australia, our
licences would be cancelled (anything over 140 kph if one is caught).
Apart
from Northern Territory, which has no speed limit, normally we have 100 kph
(62 mph) with the occasional 110 kph on our freeways in all States.
Heavily
policed by radar and camera!
