I think the fact that Mobil 1 does not meet the ILSAC GF-3 specs is solely due to the viscosity of the oil, rather than any additive package. I only just started reading about GF-3, and I thought that the info indicated that any oil above 5w-30 or 10w-30 was outside the GF-3 specification.
By using a 15w-50, the goal is to improve wear rates under high load, and protect moving parts under high stresses. But you give up a small amount of HP due to increased friction losses. However, a lot of data indicates that oils such as Mobil 1 15w-50 are as slippery or more so than a mineral based oil of lighter weight. The entire purpose of GF-3 was to improve fuel economy without adversely affecting wear, compared to a 5w-30 reference oil. The spec was "improve friction loss by 2%" for the first x hours, and by 1.3% after 29 hours or 3000 miles". That is the approximate definition. Some of the above might be slightly inaccurate, so I will try to get back to you with more accurate data. -----Original Message----- From: Kevin Hawkins [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 8:15 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: The dreaded oil thread!! The motorcycle specific oils have always been a waste of money in the past, but with the latest introduction of SL energy conserving motor oils they might be worth another look. With that said, I'll continue using Mobil 1 15w50 because it's not listed as an energy conserving oil, meaning that although it meets SL specs. it doesn't meet ILSAC GF-3 specs. This is a GOOD thing! I've had nothing but great results with Mobil 1 in my cars as well as my motorcycles. Motul and Amsoil are also excellent oils! And actually, I got the service manual. I looked through the cowling pages but did not see anything that really stood out on how to do it. What is the preferred oil among the group here? /// The information contained in this e-mail including any attachments may constitute Corvis Corporation Proprietary Information that is subject to Non-Disclosure Agreement and cannot be disclosed to any other party without the express consent of Corvis Corporation.
