If you are using a clip type masterlink you should safety wire the clip! This won't help much if you break the clip but will prevent it from coming off. It will sometimes keep a broken one on for a while - I've found half of a clip still in the safety wire. To safety wire the clip, use fine wire so it fits between the ends of the adjoining links, go around the sideplate and clip, twist it up tight (helps to have safety wire pliers but you can do it with regular pliers. Make sure you put the twist on the outside of the chain (pointing away from the sprocket). Remember to check it when you oil the chain.
NEVER, EVER, reuse a clip! When you put the clip on, open it the least amount you can to get it on. Breakage often is a result of opening them too much during installation. I have no idea how long it's been gone, but it sure freaks me out the idea of having my chain fall apart. I'd like to use a regular, non-clip style masterlink, but I've never used one before and want to make sure I don't screw up. Can anyone recommend the proper tools and technique needed, or where I might find this information? Thanks, Derek [EMAIL PROTECTED]
