Hi Doug

I removed the cat and down pipes a couple of months ago, the clamps -at
least on mine ('93 non ABS)- were spot welded to the cat, I could see no way
of removing these without doing some kind of damage, the metal is not too
thick and thins with age,the clamps being a bit stronger. Its a pity because
I think the rest of the cat is constructed pretty well. There's a composite
gasket of wire mesh and some kind of goo used to seal each pipe and I'd say
have these to hand for reassembly, I had to scrape/clean the remains prior
to refitting the pipes. I had ordered 4 new clamps never thinking the
originals were spot welded- I imagine this was done to aid
assembly/alignment. The particular clamps I got were not of the same quality
and would probably rot much quicker than the originals. I spent a lot of
hours cleaning
the cat and pipes and its possible to get a really good mirror shine on
them-you get that nice stainless steel look and its even better looking
after the engine is restarted. I treated the cat itself with a heat
resistant spray paint in an attempt add some life to it, after 4k miles
looks pretty good. The down pipes by the way are numbered 1 to 4 stamped at
the cat end. I dropped the pipes as a "unit" from the engine but I had to
loosen/giggle the r/h pipe to do so-be very careful when moving the
pipes-hold the cat tightly when twisting the pipes.

I've thought of adding some kind a small deflector as well to the underside
of the bellypan
in an attempt to keep water and muck off the clamps.

Hope this helps

Can anyone tell me if the clamps that hold the downpipes into the cat, are
integral items of the cat, or four seperate clamps. Just found the remains
of 2 in the belly pan and cant make my mind up if they were orginally a
welded part of the cat or just a loose clamp.
