Yeh a bit late I'm afraid, Phil. I looked in the Twin Lakes and Leadville area. There
is nothing that can accommodate even close to 50 to 80 people in Twin Lakes. This is a
problem in most smaller towns. The most suitable place I found in Leadville was a
hotel that wasn't as good a layout as the one in Frisco...plus the 10,000 ft altitude
can mean sleeping problems for those that normally reside near sea level. I also
looked at the Snow Mountain Ranch near Tabernash...very big (but very isolated) YMCA
place with cabins and lodge, not very central and dirt road access. If it rained the
dirt roads would be a major PITA!

Frisco is not a huge place and summer is actually low-season (although the mountains
are still very popular in summer). I've spent lots of time in the area in summer and
it never gets really crowded, certainly nothing like tourist areas in California and
other states. The old part of Frisco still has a small town atmosphere and we are
centrally located with quick access to good roads.

I'd certainly encourage those that will spend more time in Colorado (outside of the
rally) to look into accommodation in those more isolated towns.

Cheers Joe.

My $1 US discounted at 2% is likely too late....but I prefer the smaller places, less
in the midst of tourist heaven. Frisco in June is likely to be......well, full of
tourists.

Some of you may recall a few years ago when I tried to put together a similar riding
venue, and booked the Nordic Inn in Twin Lakes (www.twinlakesnordicinn.com). I prefer
places of that sort.

As for good hiking.....it's at the base of Mt. Elbert, highest in CO and an easy climb
except for the altitude. (In other words, non-technical climb.)

Not much sense in planning this for me, though. I'm not sure when I'll be back in the
US, and even if I got back by June 20, I'm not sure I'd have time to do the needed
bike prep after letting it sit for so long. I'd bet I can't make this one.

Phil (finally back on the list)
