The Suzuki 400 DRZ is popular for lighter riders and rides well as a cheaper choice. KLR's,BMW's and Honda 650L's are too heavy and either stuck in the sand are just slower and heavier. Honda 400R with Baja kit makes a good choice as well, but my buddies with this bike still can't keep up with the power and suspension of my KTM's.
