Hey Sonny, Onboarding is a tricky problem indeed. I can say the storymaker team has thought a lot about on boarding as well. We collect our visual inspiration on this tumblr blog (http://squion.tumblr.com)
I think if you're looking to setup a generic onboarding for use across all guardian project apps it should be extensible to include various options depending on the app it's being used in. But bringing uniformity to all the apps would be incredibly beneficial I believe. Happy to discuss further, and figure out how StoryMaker might be able to be moving in line with this effort.
