Welcome! This is the right place to post with questions about ChatSecure (aka
Gibberbot).

The only way to currently delete the old messages is like you said: erase the
app's data.  ChatSecure stores all of its data in an encrypted store if you
have set a password for the app.  When you run "Shutdown & Lock", then all of
ChatSecure's data are locked in an encrypted format and not accessible without
the password.
