I don't think that is true, or at least it shouldn't be. If you "End Chat" from the menu option while viewing a chat, it should delete all of the messages and media associated with that chat. I have also considered whether we should allow specific messages to be deleted, in case someone sends something you don't want to keep around for various reasons.
