logcat showed that the server was sending a malformed error to response the DIGEST challenge. I reentered the password and then it was ok. So apparently this is a bug in jabberd2 sending a bad error message. And also arguably in chatsecure, which doesn't display the malformed messsage, or at least doesn't abort the login attempt with an error. Also, I was able to create a burner account. So all in all I'm in vastly better shape with 14.2.0 than earlier - thanks to everyone for their efforts. Greg
