David Beckham: Real Madrid can end Barça dominance

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 03:45 PM PDT

David Beckham believes Real Madrid can end Barcelona’s dominance of
Spanish football and win the Primera Division title this season.
Beckham’s former club have not won a major trophy since 2008 but have
thus far impressed under new boss José Mourinho, with the nine-time
European champions top of the Spanish top flight and unbeaten in 12
games.

The LA Galaxy midfielder spoke admirably about the Portuguese coach and
emphasised his belief that Real can reclaim the title from Pep
Guardiola’s side this season.

“As much as I respect Barcelona and think it’s a great club, my heart
is always with Real Madrid,” said Beckham.

“So I believe that this year, with the manager they’ve got in, with
Florentino Perez – I love Florentino who is such a great man and makes
special things happen at the club – so with him there, with the players
they’ve got at the club, I believe they will be number one this year.”

Speaking about Mourinho, he added: “I love him as a person, he’s an
incredible person. He was one of the first people to send me a message
after I got my injury.”

Bernie Ecclestone hints at Turkish Grand Prix axe

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 03:21 PM PDT

The Turkish Grand Prix could be dropped from the Formula 1 calendar in
the coming years as Bernie Ecclestone makes plans to move the sport
into new markets.
Ecclestone agreed a deal earlier this month to take F1 to Russia in
2014 and the sport will return to the United States in 2012 at the new
circuit in Austin, Texas. And the 79-year-old is still keen to secure
new venues in Rome and South Africa.

Last weekend saw the inaugural Korean Grand Prix at Yeongam, while next
year will also feature the first Indian Grand Prix, expanding the
calendar to 20 races between March and November.

Talking about the ever-expanding calendar, Ecclestone hinted that the
relatively new Istanbul Park circuit in Turkey could be the favourite
to lose out following poor attendances.

The inaugural race in 2005 attracted a reported 60,000 on race day, but
that number plummeted to just 40,000 by 2009 forcing promoters to
reduce the weekend ticket price in a bid to boost numbers.

"Maybe someone will decide they need a rest because it’s not working
for them commercially. A good example is probably Turkey," said
Ecclestone.

"They’ve built an incredible circuit and it might even be the best, but
there’s not much enthusiasm from the public. I don’t know why.

He added: “I am sure that in the years to come, we will lose a few
races in Europe.”

The Turkish Grand Prix’s deal is due to expire next year, making it the
perfect race to drop as the sport returns to the US after a four-year
absence.

Other races also out of contract in 2012 include China's Shanghai
circuit. The event attracted 300,000 spectators on race day according
to a government statement, however that figure was later disputed, with
organisers and the government later strenuously denying the figures had
been exaggerated.

Japan's Suzuka—another older favourite of drivers and F1 fans—is also
out of contract from 2011, but any talk of dropping these venues seems
unlikely given China's influence in the global market, and Japan's
standing in the automotive industry.

For Ecclestone—and many of the circuits—affordability is the key to
extended contracts, and those circuits not making the numbers and which
are unwilling to pay the increased sanction fees because they are not
turning a profit, will be top of the list to miss out in future years.

Diego Milito Ballon d’Or snub surprises Inter president

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 02:37 PM PDT

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti admits he is surprised that Diego
Milito was not included in the 23-man shortlist for the FIFA Ballon
d'Or.
Milito, 31, played a vital role in Inter’s record-breaking treble
season last year, scoring 22 league goals in his debut season at the
San Siro.

The former Real Zaragoza forward shone during the Italian side’s
successful Champions League campaign with strikes in every knockout
round capped by an unforgettable brace against Bayern Munich in the
final.

Moratti described Milto’s omission from the list as an “incredible
decision”.

“I am very sorry for the exclusion of Diego Milito from the list of
candidates for the Ballon d’Or,” Moratti said on Wednesday. “I called
him to tell him that it’s an incredible decision.”

Milito’s exclusion may be in part down to his limited participation in
Argentina’s World Cup campaign, where he only made two appearances
after Diego Maradonna opted to utilise alternative attacking options of
the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi.

Despite being left off the list, the forward hopes the award will be
won by one of his San Siro team-mates. “I really hope that the Ballon
d’Or is won by an Inter team-mate,” he said.

The 23-man FIFA Ballon D’Or shortlist:

Xabi Alonso (Spain); Dani Alves (Brazil); Iker Casillas (Spain);
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal); Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast); Samuel Eto’o
(Cameroon); Cesc Fabregas (Spain); Asamoah Gyan (Ghana); Julio Cesar
(Brazil); Miroslav Klose (Germany); Philipp Lahm (Germany); Maicon
(Brazil); Thomas Mueller (Germany); Arjen Robben (Netherlands); Bastian
Schweinsteiger (Germany); David Villa (Spain); Xavi (Spain); Carles
Puyol (Spain); Andres Iniesta (Spain); Diego Forlan (Uruguay); Lionel
Messi (Argentina); Mesut Oezil (Germany); Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands)

Manchester United’s Michael Owen suffers injury setback

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 07:32 AM PDT

Manchester United striker Michael Owen will be out of action for around
month after suffering a hamstring injury in training.
Owen, who has been absent in recent weeks with a groin strain, had been
expected to make a return against Wolves in the Carling Cup on Tuesday
night but missed out after he was hurt in training.

The former Liverpool striker has struggled to secure a regular starting
spot in Sir Alex Ferguson's side since moving to Old Trafford in 2009
and a hamstring strain picked up in March’s Carling Cup final ruled the
30-year-old out for the remainder of the last campaign.

"It’s not going great,” said Owen. “I had a bit of a tight groin a
while ago and I’ve trained for a week preparing for last night’s game
but then I had a setback with a different muscle injury.

"Unfortunately, that ruled me out for last night and will rule me out
for a few weeks as well.

He added: "I got injured in the cup final and then subsequently this
season I was in the squad for the first 10 games or so."

"But unfortunately, because of a training ground injury the other day,
I’m going to be out for the next few weeks, which is disappointing.

"It’s all part and parcel of football. Everyone gets injured.
Hopefully, I can come back and be as strong as ever."

Owen has made four Premier League appearances for United this season.
