Wenger’s side were taught a footballing lesson when Lionel Messi scored four times in Barcelona’s 4-1 second-leg win at the Camp Nou to complete a 6-3 aggregate victory for Pep Guardiola’s men in last season’s quarter-final tie. But the Arsenal manager claims his side have learnt from that defeat and has faith that the Londoners can knock out the Spanish champions this time around after they were paired together for the second season running. “Revenge is not on my mind,” said Wenger. “We want to qualify and we want to knock them out. So is it difficult? Yes. Is it possible? Yes. “Barcelona are certainly the favourites [for the competition] and a famous team but, on their side, they did not want us either because they know they will get a game. “I think we are better than last year and we have a good opportunity to show that.” The Arsenal boss has targeted a solid run in all domestic competitions as the perfect preparation for Barcelona’s visit to Emirates Stadium on 16 February. “We are in the middle of December and we play at the end of February, so there is a long way to go,” said Wenger. “It is too early to speak about this game concretely. You can just speak about the draw. The whole context might be completely different in two months. We don’t know what we will do and how we will feel.” He added: “But the best way of going into that game with confidence is down to what we do from today until then. If we do well in the league, the FA Cup and the Carling Cup that will give us the best chance of knocking them out.” Hispania boss blames lack of experience for poor season Posted: 17 Dec 2010 06:50 AM PST Hispania Racing boss Colin Kolles believes his team's lack of experienced drivers is the reason why they struggled in 2010. The Spanish team failed to win a single point and finished 11th out of 12 teams in their first season in the sport, splitting fellow debutants Lotus Racing and Virgin Racing. Although none of the new teams scored a point in 2010, Lotus secured the lucrative 10th spot in the constructors' championship courtesy of Heikki Kovalainen's 12th-place finish in the Japanese Grand Prix–the highest finish of any of the new teams. It is no secret that HRT had the smallest budget of Formula 1's teams in 2010, a situation which saw four drivers deployed over the course of the season to cut costs and bring in vital sponsorship money to help fund their campaign. The Spanish team began the season with Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna, but the Indian was ousted in favour of Sakon Yamamoto from the German Grand Prix onwards, with the Japanese driver bringing significantly more money to the team. Former Jaguar and Red Bull Racing driver Christian Klien was the fourth driver used by the team in the closing stages of the season. "We were the most reliable new team,” said Kolles. “I think the only reason why we did not finish 10th is that teams like Lotus and Virgin had more experienced drivers during the whole season. "We improved over the season. Reliability was the first objective. We learned a lot and hope that from now on we can concentrate more on improving the performance." HRT have so far struggled to put together a package for 2011, with a deal with former F1 team Toyota to supply chassis designs falling through due to lack of payment. But despite ongoing financial concerns, Kolles is confident his team can improve next season. "We are working to have a better package than last year,” he said. “Obviously this depends on a lot of factors but we are working to achieve our goals.” HRT will again be supplied with Cosworth engines along with Virgin and Williams, as Lotus switch to Renault power. Kolles, however, is yet to name his drivers, with the team again expected to look at candidates likely to bring in large sponsors to secure their drive. Experienced former Sauber driver Pedro de la Rosa is understood to be top of Kolles' wish list, but only if the Spaniard can raise the necessary funding. Ashes: Mitchell Johnson puts Australia in charge in Perth Posted: 17 Dec 2010 04:55 AM PST Mitchell Johnson tore through England's top order to place Australia in the driving seat on day two of the third Test in Perth. The left arm seamer took 6-38 on his return to the side to hamper England's first innings total as they collapsed to post just 187. Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell passed fifty but fell 81 runs behind Australia's first-innings total. With the sun beating down from a cloudless sky the conditions looked ideal for England to comfortably surpass Australia's 268. Alastair Cook and Strauss, carrying on from their overnight stand on 29, began comfortably. The partnership reached 76 before Cook pushed at Johnson and spliced to Michael Hussey at gully. This sparked a middle order collapse as the recalled Johnson found his rhythm in a devastating spell. Jonathan Trott was trapped in front after a vicious in swinger for 0 and Kevin Pietersen fell in identical fashion soon after, also for a duck. The late movement proved too much for the pair. Strauss passed his fifty but then tickled an edge through to Brad Haddin, leaving his side 94-4. England were left reeling when Johnson struck again to claim his forth wicket, Paul Collingwood lbw to another in swinger which came back from outside off stump. Bell and Matt Prior came together and settled well to carry England over and beyond the 100 mark as they rebuilt after Johnson's fireworks. Peter Siddle moved around the wicket looking to intimidate with the shorter ball but his lack of accuracy saw a number of deliveries fly harmlessly down the leg side. Yet the plan eventually paid off as he struck Prior on the thigh before it ricocheted onto his gloves and hit the stumps. This exposed the tail, which has been lengthened by the loss of Stuart Broad, and Australia’s pace attack made short work of maximising their first-innings lead. Graeme Swann edged Harris before Chris Tremlett was another victim of Johnson's in swing. Bell passed fifty but was well caught by captain Ricky Ponting at second slip as he flashed hard at a wide delivery. Fittingly, Johnson took the final wicket of James Anderson to finish with 6-38, putting both his team and himself backing on track after a torrid start to this Ashes series. With a lead of 81 Watson and Phil Hughes looked to put England under pressure with some aggressive play from the off. Watson targeted Finn in his very first over but the young seamer fought back and took the wicket of Hughes, Collingwood taking a far simpler catch at slip. Anderson and Finn applied the brakes and Ponting gloved down the leg side. Initially given not out another good review from England saw the decision overturned for Finn's second wicket. England became obsessed with the short ball as Michael Clarke arrived at the crease and he raced onto 20 in just 15 balls. However the introduction of Tremlett, who bowled a fuller length forced the Aussie vice captain to play onto his own stumps. Watson (61) and Michael Hussey (24) took Australia to the close unbeaten and with a lead of 200. Arsenal handed Barcelona test for second season running Posted: 17 Dec 2010 04:33 AM PST Arsenal have been drawn against Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League. Arsène Wenger’s side will meet Pep Guardiola’s Spanish champions in the knock-out stages for the second season running after the two teams went head-to-head in last season’s quarter-finals. Barcelona, who overcame Arsenal with a 4-1 drubbing at the Camp Nou in that tie, also got the better of the gunners in the 2006 final. The first leg will be played at Emirates Stadium on 16 February. “It is a tough draw for us,” said Arsenal secretary David Miles. “But given that Barcelona got the better of us last year we feel that the time is right and that we can turn the tables this time. Elsewhere, Tottenham will return to the San Siro after they were paired against AC Milan, with the first game at the San Siro. Manchester United play French side Marseille, while Chelsea have been handed a tie with Danish outfit FC Copenhagen.
