Indo Mesothelioma - While surgery is rarely a solution to mesothelioma
in and of itself, it can be used effectively in conjunction with
treatments like chemotherapy. Surgical procedures can help slow the
spread of mesothelioma by simply removing malignant tumors. In
addition, doctors sometimes need to surgically remove part of a
cancerous growth to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma.
If your doctor has recommended mesothelioma surgery to diagnose or
treat mesothelioma, it is normal to feel apprehensive about the
procedure. We hope that being informed about the potential benefits of
mesothelioma surgery can help put your mind at rest. Advanced surgical
techniques have made these procedures safer and more effective than
ever before.
Types of Mesothelioma Surgery
Depending on the type and stage of mesothelioma with which you have
been diagnosed, your doctor may recommend one of several different
kinds of surgery. Potential options include:
- Pleurectomy: This procedure involves removing a cancerous portion of
the pleura, a part of the mesothelium that covers and protects the
lungs. This can help to relieve the effects of the tumor, reduce its
size, and delay its spreading to other parts of the body.
- Pleurodesis: Pleurodesis is a palliative procedure, meaning it is
intended to minimize the symptoms of an illness rather than cure it. It
treats pleural effusion, or a buildup of fluid in the lungs, which is a
common problem for patients with pleural mesothelioma.
- Pneumonectomy: Pneumonectomies are generally recommended for patients
with pleural mesothelioma that only affects one lung. It involves
removing the affected lung in an attempt to stop the spread of the
disease.
- Extrapleural Pneumonectomy: This procedure is only recommended for
mesothelioma patients who otherwise have strong lungs and hearts. It is
an extreme form of surgery that involves removing parts of the pleura,
diaphragm, and pericardium (lining of the heart). It can be an
effective way to remove cancerous growths that have spread extensively.
- Cytoreductive Surgery: This is a recently developed form of
mesothelioma surgery. It involves removal of cancerous growths followed
by chemotherapy administered directly to the affected area. It has been
effective in improving average life expectancies for mesothelioma
patients. While mesothelioma surgery is not recommended for every
patient, it can be an effective way to help reduce the disease’s
symptoms while improving the patient’s long-term prognosis.
