People urged to follow safety measures while using LPG
NT Staff Reporter
Panaji Aug 5: The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd
(BPCL) has introduced a new safety rubber tube which
is used in connecting the LPG regulator to the
appliance as fifty per cent of the accidents occur due
to leakage from the rubber tube.
A note issued by the corporation on Wednesday said
that the tube is fire-proof, rodent-proof and
weather-proof and that it should be changed once in
five years.
It said that it was companys endeavour to ensure
safety of the LPG consumers. It also explained the
details about the safety measures recommended to its
consumers in Goa to maintain a safe environment at
home.
The senior LPG sales officer, Mr Jitendra Jiandani
said that the BPL regularly conducts safety clinics to
its consumers in Goa. Last year nearly 36 safety
clinics were held in Goa in association with the local
LPG dealers.
During the demonstration he advised the consumers to
switch off the domestic pressure regulator when stove
is not in use, especially during night. He said
consumer should avoid tampering with cylinder or
allied equipment, especially covering the rubber tube
with any metallic/plastic conduit.
For ensuring safety, the mechanics of Bharatgas
distributors should be allowed to carry out bi-annual
mandatory inspection of gas installation, he informed.
He advised that the cylinder should always be kept
away from any source of heat or flame and should be
kept in vertically upright position. Besides, he said
the gas-stove should always be on a platform at a
higher level than the cylinder i.e. gas-stove should
not be kept on the floor for cooking purpose.
He said that during refill, the delivery boy may be
asked to carry out pre-delivery inspection of the
cylinder for safety. He also said that the consumer
should not leave the gas-stove unattended. The burners
could extinguish by overflow of cooking material (or
even drought of air) allowing gas to leak. The
accumulated gas could get ignited by the second burner
in operation (or any other source) resulting in fire.

Bus fare hike reasonable: Parsenkar
NT Staff Reporter
Panaji Aug 7: The spokesperson of the state unit of
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mr Laxmikant Parsekar
said that the recent bus-fare hike by the government
was most genuine and reasonable, and blamed the
state unit of Congress Party for using the issue to
whip up public sentiments for cheap political gains.
The president of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee
(GPCC), Mr Luizinho Faleiro had demanded immediate
rollback of the 20 per cent bus-fare hike. The GPCC
president had also threatened to launch an agitation
against the hike, which will come into force from
August 16.
Any price hike definitely affects the common man, Mr
Parsekar said, adding that the decision about the
present bus-fare hike was taken by the government
after four-and-a-half years, that too, to a limited
extent.
There is a hike of 16 per cent and not 20 per cent in
the fare of the state public transport vehicles, while
the hike in the city bus fare is only 12.5 per cent,
he observed. Mr Parsekar said that the previous
Congress governments had hiked the bus-fare in 1996,
1997 and 1999. It was 25 per cent in 1997 while in
1999 it was 20 per cent.
The Congress Party should also look at the current
price of diesel in Maharashtra and Karnataka - both
states having Chief Ministers of the Congress Party -
which stands at Rs 29.85 per litre and Rs 30.05 per
litre, respectively, he said, adding that in
comparison the price of diesel in Goa is Rs 25.21 per
litre.
Mr Parsekar welcomed the decision of Mr Faleiro to
launch an agitation against the price hike, pointing
out that, however, it should be targetted at the
central government at New Delhi which has raised the
prices of fuels on two occasions, during successive
months.
He also said that during the discussion on demands for
transport, at the recently concluded monsoon session
of the state legislative assembly, almost all the
Congress leaders, including Mr Pratapsingh Rane, Mr
Jitendra Deshprabhu, Mr Francisco Sardinha, Ms
Victoria Fernandes and Mr Joaquim Alemao had attacked
the government for not complying with the demands of
the public transport bus owners as regards to the
bus-fare hike and had alleged that the government
would make the bus owners face big losses. Mr Parsekar
also observed that the Congress MLAs were playing to
the gallery; the assembly gallery having the presence
of private transport bus owners.
Now, when the bus-fare has been hiked, they have
something else to say, he said. Increasing the
bus-fare by 16 per cent, when the diesel prices have
risen by 94 per cent, that is from Rs 13 in 1999 to Rs
25.21 in 2004, cannot be called unreasonable from any
viewpoint, Mr Parsekar remarked.
He also observed that the existing passenger tax in
Goa is Rs 30 per seat, per month, making it Rs 1 per
seat, per day. In the neighbouring states the
passenger tax is based on the sale of tickets and
ranges from 17.5 per cent to 19.5 per cent, Mr
Parsekar said.
