Indians celebrate Independence Day in grand style

The Indian community celebrated its 57th Indian Independence Day yesterday with a variety of events. A flag-hoisting ceremony was held at the Indian Embassy premises in Gudaibiya. The flag was hoisted by charge d'affaires H R Mohey, who read out the Independence Day message from Indian President A P J Abdul Kalam. School children sang patriotic songs at the ceremony, which was attended by hundreds of people, including embassy second secretary V P Sachdeva, embassy officials and community members. The Indian Club held a similar ceremony at its premises in Manama. The Indian flag was hoisted by president Vicky Kambhoj while general secretary Manoj Pillai hoisted the Bahraini flag. More than 85 people attended the event, which included a traditional breakfast. Another celebration was held last night under the patronage of the Co-ordination Committee of Indian Associations and was attended by more than 500 people. The main highlights of the event were patriotic songs and cultural programmes, presented by various clubs. The Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam also held a flag hoisting ceremony at its premises in Manama. The flag was hoisted by samajam president George Mathew and more than 50 members attended the event. Another celebration followed last night at the same venue. It featured members' children presenting cultural programmes. It was followed by a public meeting, in which community member Paul Sebastian delivered the Independence Day message. Sweets were distributed to mark the event, which included the screening of the movie Gandhi. The Kerala Catholic Association held another flag-hoisting ceremony at its premises in Segaiya. The flag was hoisted by acting president Raphael Wilson, who delivered the Independence Day message to about 25 members, who attended the event. The Kannada Sangha president B Rajkumar hoisted the flag at the club in Manama in another ceremony, also to celebrate India's Independence Day. It was followed by the singing of patriotic songs by children. Another celebration will be held on August 20 at the Carlton Hotel in Adliya at 10.30am. The winners of the patriotic song competition held yesterday will be presented with their prizes during the celebration, which will also feature skits, dances, songs and tableaux, depicting the glory of India. It will be followed by buffet lunch. Entry coupons must be collected from the Sangha office on or before Thursday as no coupons will be issued at the programme venue. The Ramee International Hotel also marked the event with a flag-hoisting ceremony at the hotel in Juffair. The flag was hoisted by hotel group general manager Shantharam Shetty. Also present at the event were assistant general manager Hemant Sharma, food and beverages manager Reginald Mortimer and other staff members. Sweets were distributed to mark the event. |
