Panaji Nov 3: The directorate of education (DoE) has initiated the process of transferring the Central Library to a new air-conditioned venue, at Patto Plaza. Presently the premier city library is located in the Institute Menezes Braganza building.The new venue will help in both, the preservation of old books as well as documents in the possession of the library and strengthening the library movement in the state, informed the DoE director, Mr Ashok Desai.
He also pointed out that till date, revenue amounting to Rs 10 crore has been collected by the excise department under the Library Tax Scheme. �The DoE has send a related proposal to the government requesting it to increase the amount to Rs 15 to 17 crore by providing financial assistance, and utilise the same for setting up the library in a modern, well-equipped building, at Patto Plaza.� he informed.
The corner stone for the project is expected to be laid by the end of the year or beginning of next year. The outline of the project is nearly ready.
The DoE also has two district level library projects in the pipeline.
Further speaking, Mr Desai said that the directorate has appointed a committee of 19 environmental experts for preparing text books for the environment science subject, to be introduced in schools from next academic year, in response to a related Supreme Court verdict. The books would be prepared for classes from standard I to XII.
Mr Desai observed that although books of other existing subjects already include lessons linked to the environment, the new books would be entirely dedicated to the subject.
The group of experts would work on the preparation of syllabus, training the teachers of these subject and preparing reference books. Mr Desai is the chairperson of the expert committee.
