The visiting Goan teams from Kuwait and Qatar totally outplayed their Bahraini counterparts in all departments of the game in the Gulf Goans one day six-a-side football tournament played on Sunday at Al Qadisiya grounds, Salmaniya, Bahrain.
Dawat Restaurant-sponsored AVC Kuwait were the eventual winners of this tournament organised by Bahrain Goans. They beat Goan Welfare Association (GWA) Qatar by a solitary goal in the finals. The all important goal came with a thunderous strike from Agnelo Miranda, who was later awarded the highest scorer trophy for his tally of eight goals in the tournament. Having topped group B, the Kuwait team thrashed Canacona 7 - 0 in the quarter finals, and stopped the fine run of Navelim in the semis with a 4 - 0 demolition.
The GWA Qatar with convincing win in the league matches topped group C and edged past another Qatar Goans outfit The Rolling Youth with a 1 - 0 win, and got rid of their own second string team with a 4- 1 win in the other semifinal. Navelim salvaged some pride for the Bahrain Goan teams by beating the B team of GWA Qatar 1 - 0 in a clash to decide the third place. In all 16 teams divided in four groups played on a league basis with two top teams from each group qualifying for the knockout stage.
The other teams that made to the quarter final stage were Vasco and Maxem Canacona. James Fernandes of GWA Qatar was adjudged the player of the tournament, and the best goalkeeper Cup went to Suneet Desai of Cansaulim while the fair play trophy was claimed by Benaulim. All the outstation teams were also presented Mementos for their participation.
There was a heavy response for the Goa Juniors exhibition match that was scheduled to mark the Indian Children's day. As many as 40 boys under 15 years turned out for registration and the organisers split them up into East, West, North & South Goa zones and played two exhibition matches. Cheered by a large holiday crowd East Goa beat West Goa 1 - 0 in the first match, whereas the second match between North and South Goa Juniors ended in a draw and had to be decided on penalties with North Goa prevailing with a 2 - 1 verdict. All children were awarded medals for their participation.
The tournament was sponsored by Nonoo Exchange Co. and co-sponsors were Gulf Computer Services, Union Press, Basma, OTSC, Union Plastics, Jolly Traders, Coca Cola, Sony Ericsson, Aramex, Cyril Garage and Al Jazira Cold Stores Co.
The tournament matches were officiated by Seby Fernandes, Joy Corda, Nicholas Fernandes and Victor Fernandes under the supervision of ex-Bahrain Expatriate Football league referee Sadanand Naik. Earlier in the day Vincent D'Costa welcomed the teams and G.R. Crasto compered the proceedings while Francis Correia proposed a vote of thanks.
