Margao Nov 17: Thousands of devotees from different walks of life converged at Our Lady of Holy Rosary church, Navelim today to celebrate the annual feast with religious pomp and gaiety. The main theme for the solemn feast was �The pilgrim Mary, model of the church.� Earlier, various themes related to the Goan society were dealt with during the nine-day novenas and focus was laid more on how to improve the society in various aspects.Speaking to The Navhind Times, the parish priest, Fr Jose Antonio Costa disclosed that around 4 a.m. the brass band was in attendance in the church premises. Thereafter, he said masses followed consecutively from 5 a.m. onwards till noon.
The festive mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. by the rector of Rachol seminary, Fr Avinash Rebello. In his homily, he appealed to the faithful to follow the life of Mother Mary in every aspect of life, as she is the model of the church. The parish priest said that many changes were introduced by the church this year to help the laity grow in faith and devotion. �After the festive mass, usually all the devotees would join in the procession and much time would be wasted. But this year only the confrarias were asked to partake in the procession,� he added.
�This year,� he said, �we appealed to those in the procession to use only the footpath instead of the highway and all sort of disturbances and confusion was avoided.� Fr Costa said that there would be presentation of ten dramas organised by the youth of various wards on the occasion. According to a legend, the Navelim church was built out of mud similar to the other churches in Salcete taluka, in 1594 to 1598. The builders were Jesuits and the people of the village financed the entire project. The first parish priest of Navelim church was a French Jesuit, Fr John Sena. Finally the church was re-constructed with laterite stones on a bigger scale by an unknown Goan merchant.
