UNI New Delhi Dec 22, 2004: English author, Upamanyu Chatterjee, Hindi poet, Viren Dangwal, Konkani authoress, Jayanti Naik and Malayalam short story writer, Paul Zachariah are among 22 winners of the Sahitya Akademi awards for 2004. The awards were announced this afternoon after a meeting of the executive board of the Sahitya Akademi chaired by its president, Mr Gopi Chand Narang approved the winners.
Poets lead the list of winners in seven of the 22 languages, including Hirendra Nath Dutta (Assamese), Ghulam Nabi Firaq (Kashmiri), Chandrabhanu Singh (Maithili), Birendrajit Naorem (Manipuri) and Tamilanban (Tamil). Besides Upamanyu Chatterjee, who won the award for The Mammaries of the Welfare State, five other novelists are also among the awardees. They include Geetha Nagabhushana (Kannada), Sadanand Deshmukh (Marathi), Nand Bhardwaj (Rajasthani) and Naveen (Telugu). Malayalam short story writer, Zachariah won the award for his short story collection Zachariyayute Kathakal while Hindi poet Dangwal bagged the award for Dushchakra Mein Srista, his collection of poems. Essayists Sudhir Chakraborty (Bengali), Shiv Nath (Dogri) and Prafulla Kumar Mohanty (Oriya) are also among the winners. The award for Punjabi went to critic Sutinder Singh while fellow critic, Amritlal Vegad is the winner in Gujarati.
The awards carry Rs 50,000 and a plaque each. The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held in the national capital in February next year, said the Akademi secretary, Mr K Satchidanandan.

NT Staff Reporter adds: Jayanti Naik, Konkani authoress who is the recipient of this year�s Sahitya Academy award for her anthology of short stories Athang, started writing in 1983. Her first short story written in Marathi was published by Rashtramat. A native of Amona village in Quepem taluka, Naik later switched to Konkani and started writing short stories, poems and children literature. Naik has in all 19 books to her credit. Naik has extensively written on Goan folklore and done research on Goan folklore. She has written in all 11 books on folk literature, which have been widely appreciated by literary critics and those studying the local folklore. Speaking to The Navhind Times, Naik said that she was very happy for being selected for the Sahitya Academy award. The short stories from Athang revolve around rural life of Goa.
She said she had not expected that the prestigious award would come her way so early, but was elated for the same. Several Konkani institutions have congratulated Naik for receiving the award. The Konkani Bhasha Mandal president, Mr Biku Bombi Naik congratulated Naik and wished her success in her future literary career.
