Looking Differently at Names

by Bicaji Ghanekar

THERE are some interesting things that one can be discovered if one observes names and surnames.

If one looks at Goan surnames, they mostly end with the word car for example, Borkar, Tarcar, Salkar, so even if one is not bhatcar then also they can have a car. Take surnames like Carvalho, Cardozo, Carrasco or names like Carlos, Carmeline, always there is a car.

Names or surnames of some people dont even remotely describe the person. For example, the surname Boddko, it would mean that a person with this surname is either bold nor is using wig or making hair black. Vaghmare, Vaghdhare and Vagpalle meaning tiger killer, tiger catcher and tiger rearer respectively. In reality these persons are scared of tiger and never even go to circus with their children.

Once I went to an office where a clerk told me to wait. Immediately, I replied, I knew that you will tell me to wait. On hearing this he was surprised and nervously asked, Why? What happened? I told him to see his nameplate `S S Rao. In Konkani `Rao means wait. He was happy and I told him that I would be happy if the nameplate had `No No Chal on it, for in Konkani `Chal means go.

We were having an officer by surname Vag. Believe me we all were afraid of him. Apart from the his name meaning tiger, he was was very strict.

There are different names of mangoes such as Mousarade, Fernandes, Colaco, Alfonso, Hilarn, etc. These are the names of the priests who brought the tree of this great fruit from Brazil to Goa. Mango is originally from Brazil.

Another incident worth mention is wherein an officer asked the newly appointed office-boy, Are Pedro, Vaz ailo? (Hey Pedro, has Vaz come?). The office-boy answered, No sir, Vaz eyunk na.

After about half an hour, a senior officer came to the office and questioned Mr Vaz, Is this the time to come to the office? Mr Vaz replied, No sir, I came to work at 9.30 a.m sharp. The officer was surprised. He asked the office-boy, didnt you tell me that Mr Vaz has not come. The office-boy was nervous, he was newly-appointed so he felt that the boss was asking him whether he was feeling bored. I did not know that the name of the officer is Mr Vaz, the office-boy replied.
