The GHAG had a meeting with the artists at "Gitanjali" ,the old People's High School buiding renovated and made into a Reading room-cum-art gallery by Jack Sukhija [ grandson of the one and only Jack Sequeira], at Fontainhas on 25 October, 2005. Artist and art teacher, Rajendra Usapkar, has a big role to play in the coming days. Thomas Vaz, Alex Fernandes and Prasad Pankar will exhibit their fantastic photographs. Yolanda de Souza, Harshada Kerkar, Gauri Divan, Shirin Modi, Savio Peres and others will be exhibiting their paintings. Daniel D'Souza will be exhibiting his plants near Fundacao Oriente while there will be a poster exhibition in the Fundacao premises.
We walked round the area from Tarcar's/ 31January Bakery [Rua de Natal] to the Antonio DeSouza house and stage.

participate in these two competitions at the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts 2005 are invited to send in their entries by November 25, 2005 to the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts 2005 office at 29/30 Green Valley, Porvorim, Goa 403521. Entries must include one
photograph of the artists work, a brief bio-data, recent exhibitions (if any) and a returning address. Participants must be prepared to set up their entries in locations or spots at the festival venue in co-ordination with the rest of the festival arrangements and in collaboration with the festival managers.
An office of the organizers will be set up at the venue. Competitors will be allowed to sell their entries at the end of the festival on 3rd December 2005 after a jury panel judges the competitions. 30% of all sales will be collected from the buyers for which a
receipt will be given. Half of this amount will be divided equally amongst all participating houses and the other half retained by the organizers to cover expenses of the festival.

PANAJI: The second Fontainhas Festival of Arts, 2005, will be held in the heritage precincts of Fontainhas-Mala here between November 26 and December 3.
The event is being organised by the Goa Heritage Action Group and the Entertainment Society of Goa with the Corporation of the City of Panaji and Goa Tourism as festival partners.
The festival this year will coincide with the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will be held between November 24 and December 4, 2006.
"This is a unique festival that uses the heritage houses in the precinct as temporary art galleries. It is designed to be an international event with Goan houses as the backdrop and Goa as the venue," Heta Pandit of Goa Heritage Action Group said.
The festival, which includes the exhibition and sale of art from private houses, attracted many people last year, including domestic and foreign tourists.
The organisers said artists and performers who wish to participate in the festival may send their entries by October 15 to the Fontainhas Festival of Arts, 2005, 29/30 Green Valley, Porvorim, Goa 403521. Entries must include one photograph of the artist's work, a brief bio-data, particulars of recent exhibitions in which the artist participated, if any, and the artist's address. The Goa Heritage Action Group was formed in 2000 and is a registered charity dedicated to the preservation of Goa's heritage.
The high point of the festival is lectures delivered by five leading artists, Mr. Pandit said. During last year's festival, Prafulla Dahanukar, Meera Devidayal, Jahangir Sabavala, Saryu Doshi and Rekha Rodwittye delivered the lectures, which were attended by a large number of artists. Heritage fest to light up Goa's Latin quarter Organisers of the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts hope to revitalize Panjims 200 years old Latin quarter and put the spotlight back on Goas neglected architectural legacy. Part of the bustle of everyday city life, Panjim's quaint Latin quarter at Fontainhas will be under the spotlight once again, when the weeklong Fontainhas Festival of the Arts took off in January.
A settlement on the fringes of the capital, Fontainhas (which derives its name from the fountain at the foot of the hill) began to sprout round 1770, according to local historian Percival Noronha who is also a resident of the area.
It is patterned very much on the lines of Lisbons Bairo Alto, which has a Moorish tone to it, therefore its classification as the Latin quarter. I have seen similar quarters in France as well, says Mr Noronha. With single-storeyed houses interrupted only by narrow lanes, Fontainhas Iberian ambience makes it an attractive proposition for tourism promotion. A number of houses in the area have already been converted into pousadas (small heritage hotels).
What was unique about the Fontainhas festival, is that artists exhibited their works in the houses within the Latin
quarter and Mala. Some 45 artists, including painters and potters, turned 40 houses in the area into galleries.
In fact, the potential of such events is far greater than just luring more tourists. Over the years, the loss of spontaneity in the Carnival has been widely commented on; dancers taking part in the floats look as if they're performing some difficult chore, rather than enjoying themselves in doing what they enjoy. Goa needs to build up its brand, and uniqueness, not merely to attract tourists, but to make itself a better place for the citizen and year-round resident. A place that taps more effectively the potential of every resident of the State. That, in itself, is perhaps the best strategy to also attract tourists
