Margao Nov 5: The former chief minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar today supported the demands of the local film producers and criticised the Rane government for delaying the release of financial grants to local filmmakers.

Speaking to reporters this evening at Assolna, Mr Parrikar opined that financial assistance should be immediately released and instead of holding the state film festival lately, it should have been held after IFFI. “This would have provided local producers with an opportunity to learn from other filmmakers and improve on quality,” he said.

Mr Parrikar stated that it was actually his government that had formulated a scheme for local film producers. “Had my government been in power, all this would have never happened,” he said.

Concerning the BJP managing to gain power over the Margao municipal council, Mr Parrikar said that he had convened a special meeting with the councillors of Margao to discuss with them about various ideas and proposals to generate funds for the council. “The taxation pattern will have to be studied in detail and income due to the council will be worked out,” he said. Mr Parrikar also mentioned that the council would gain funds to the tune of Rs 2 crore.

Meanhile, a group of local film producers reiterated their demands for financial assistance for film makers, urging the state government to end discrimination in this regard. They lamented that for the 3rd State Film Festival some films which were not censored, were also included.

The producers informed that the government-specified rules were not followed and films that were not equipped with a censor certificate were allowed to participate, apart from some films being nominated for various awards. They also demanded immediate relief by November 20, failing which they would agitate.

One of the producers, Mr Amar Sawant disclosed that if their demands were not resolved by November 20, then the producers would be forced to boycott IFFI and support the views of West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadev Bhattacharya.

Mr Bonifacio Dias opined that the department of information and publicity made a big mistake by breaking the censorship rules and permitting more than four films that had not been censored. Mr Arnaldo D’Costa, whose film Kanteantlem Ful bagged the best Konkani film award said that he was grateful to his director, Dyanesh Moghe and the entire crew and star-cast for the award. Mr D’Costa further demanded that the Goa Konkani Academy, which provided financial grants ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh to films like Daulat, Chakra and Konn Konnacho, should be clear about the criteria adopted in disbursing grants.

Mr D’Costa demanded that the government should investigate into the criteria of the GKA grants. “It is public money and needs to be used judiciously,” he said.
