This tiatr educates rural masses on AIDS myths

HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, NOV 1
— It’s not just another tiatr that entertains but it is coupled with information about HIV/AIDS. “Amchea Jivitantlim Bhavnnam-The feelings from our life” a tiatr written and directed by tiatr personality Ligorio Fernandes, is an innovative approach of the Goa State AIDS Control Society (GSACS) to get across the message of HIV/AIDS to rural masses.

Three months of research on the subject, eight days of script writing and two months of intensive rehearsals have gone in to the making of this tiatr said Fernandes while interacting with Herald. Funded by the Goa State AIDS Control Society (GSACS), the tiatr has toured 12 villages so far and is yet to set stage in another eight villages.
It’s a non-commercial tiatr, which is free for public viewing. Fernandes said “it’s my intention to help the people and not make money out of it.” Fernandes has to his credit family and religious dramas such as “Judas,” “Julius Cesar” and many more since he ventured out in to tiatr scripting and direction in 1976. He was felicitated with the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) media award in 2001 for his work.
Self motivated and dedicated in his work, Fernandes is totally satisfied with the audience response for this tiatr. It is sad that facts about HIV/AIDS are still not clear amongst people, says Fernandes. He said that the tiatr covers details about the subject and people have responded by saying that it has driven away many misconceptions about HIV/AIDS.
The GSACS came up with the idea to spread AIDS awareness in villages through a tiatr as Goan masses come forward to see these tiatrs and the message is got across. Fernandes said that it is through words as well as visual effects that people remember what is conveyed to them and there is no better way to educate people about HIV/AIDS than our very own medium of Goan folklore.
The tiatr opens the stage to drama, comedy, information about AIDS all packed in two and half hours and towards the end the audience still wants to wait behind to see more, claimed Fernandes.
