I'd say the book would be a great buy. It adds new layers to the game that I found intriguing. There's a social setting here that's absent in the videogame - though it's not as detailed as what's given in GURPS: Blue Planet. I think if he's that fascinated with the Alpha Centauri concept, he'd get a lot out of the depth presented in GURPS:AC. And if he's a new GURPS player... heck, yeah.
