My physics is about fifteen years in the past and it was only a basic college primer class, so about the only thing I get from this is the rock has to be really big and really fast. :-) How big is the rock in the example?

A 100m rock at 0.87c would release 3.3x10^26J, or enough to blow off the atmosphere, which will certainly be adequate to make the world uninhabitable. Blowing the planet apart takes about a 10 km rock at 0.87c.

Cool. If the object was constructed of a much denser material, tungsten for instance, the size would decrease, correct?
