Thoroughbred horses are an example of this. Historically the average times of all race horses has been increasing but the record times have not increased significantly. In the Ky. Derby for example Secretariat's 1973 record of 1:59 2/5 still stands. The previous record was Northern Dancer's 1964 time of 2:00. The record in 1900 was 2:06 1/4.
