What normal profession is he?

Mortician or Anthropologist?

Vivisection is yes normally illegal.. But not unknown for doctors and like to
have a sorce of cadavers, especially for medical schools (people get pissed
about Army medics using pigs for practice, they are close in size and organ
placement to humans).

There is organlegging still going on, namely you need a heart but the normal
means is not working, so you pay someone to find you a heart, Or one reason why
some homeless people disapear? Chopping up in an organ shop, with their heart,
liver and like being placed in some wealthy and/or desperate person.

Scrolls, source of scrolls? Old monestaries or like? Most archives, monestaries
and old book stories do not like their manuscripts being cut up and
used/burned.. But never know the price may go up, so never know? Grave and
archeological site robbing..

Indiana Jones - Archeaologist, Anthropologist or just professional grave robber
working for some rich person to fill his/her private museum/collection.. Common
practice and still around in the 19th century.

Jack the Ripper - rogue royal, or doctor going hunting for body parts, or some
angry rich pervert who had an issue with hookers and like "ladies" . The dark
side of Pigmalion (My Fair Lady). Serial killer or collecting for some doctor
and his need for cadavers for show or study?

Ripper, was likely a doctor, due to his knowledge of medicine, or a failed
medical student?
