This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

The 'double issue' of this week presents the same ship twice, once as
a Vehicles design and once with the Spaceships rules. The twin versions
are not interchangeable in the same game, but they have a similar look
and feel in both systems.

300-ton Unstreamlined Hyperfreighter v1.0 (TL10)
  Copyright 2009 by Onno Meyer

This starship uses one obvious violation of physics as we know it (the
hyperdrive) and a few less obvious ones to allow interstellar travel and
adventures. The freighter is unstreamlined, so she uses orbital transfer
stations or shuttles at both ends of the flight.
The ship has a main hull and two spin capsules rotating at 0.2 G. Each
capsule has quarters for ten persons, usually one for the passengers and
one for the crew. The hull contains the bridge, engines, tanks and holds
for some 90 tons of cargo. The freighter is armed with two x-ray lasers,
both for meteorite defense and to deter piracy or hostile aliens.
The fusion rockets use 1,500 gallons of reaction mass per hour. A full
load of provisions is $18,000.

Subassemblies: Body +7, two Pods +6.
Powertrain: Three 25,000-lb. vectored fusion rockets; 750-ton
hyperdrive; two 200-kW RTGs; 10,000-kW fusion reactor; three
90,000,000-kWs rechargeable power cells; 23,040,000-kWs rechargeable
  power cell.
Fuel: 20,000 gallons water.
Occ: 5 bridge RCS, 8 double-occupancy cabins, 4 single-occupancy cabins.
Cargo: 9,000 cf.

Equipment:
Body: Full stabilization and cyberslave mounts for X-Ray Lasers; two
extreme-range laser communicators; two 4,000-mile, air-search radars;
two 1,600-mile thermographs; 1,600-mile radscanner; three x200
astronomical LLTVs; precision navigation instruments; transponder; four
inertial navigation systems; two HUDWACs with pupil scanners; advanced
radar/laser detector; three C6 hardened microframes; 10 terminals; full
fire suppression system; engineering mini-workshop; 3-man airlock; two
20 man-day limited life systems. Pods: 60-foot spin arm; extreme-range
radio; 5 terminals; full fire suppression system; automed; 100-sf mess;
1-man airlock; 20-man full life system; 1,500 man-days of provisions.
External: Radiation shielding.

Design Notes
Body is 20,000 cf. Pods are 5,000 cf each. Structure is medium,
standard. Armor is standard composite. Sealed. Computerized controls
with duplicate maneuver controls. 4,989 cf of empty space in the Body
and 585 cf of empty space in each pod. Empty weight is 240,000 lbs.

300-ton Unstreamlined Hyperfreighter, Spaceships Version v1.0 (TL10^)
  Copyright 2009 by Onno Meyer

This starship uses one obvious violation of physics as we know it (the
hyperdrive) and a few less obvious ones to allow interstellar travel and
adventures. The freighter is unstreamlined, so she uses orbital transfer
stations or shuttles at both ends of the flight.
The freighter has quarters for twenty persons and holds for 89 tons of
cargo. She is armed with two lasers for meteorite defense, or perhaps to
deter piracy or hostile aliens, even if 3 MJ are rather underpowered for
combat. The hull is to small to create significant spin gravity, which
limits the endurance except for zero-G adapted crews.
The freighter has a 300-ton (SM+7) unstreamlined hull.

Systems Table

Front Hull System
[1] Nanocomposite Armor (dDR 15).
[2-4] Habitat (2 cabins each).
[5] Habitat (2 bunkrooms).
[6!] Tertiary Battery (two fixed mounts with 3MJ UV Lasers, 14
             tons cargo).
[core] Control Room (C7 computer, comm/sensor 6, and 3 control
             stations).

Central Hull System
[1] Nanocomposite Armor (dDR 15).
[2-6] Cargo (15 tons capacity each).

Rear Hull System
[1] Nanocomposite Armor (dDR 15).
[2] Fusion Torch (0.5 G acceleration).
[3-5] Fuel Tank (15 tons of hydrogen providing 15 mps each).
[6] Stardrive Engine (FTL-1).
[core] Fusion Reactor (provides two power points).

Each shift has an officer, a helmsman and an engineer on the bridge,
and a technician in the engine room. Two service crew bring the total
to ten.
