This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml
Onno Meyer, 2010-01-18
The 'double issue' of this week presents the same ship twice, once as
a Vehicles design and once with the Spaceships rules. The twin versions
are not interchangeable in the same game, but they have a similar look
and feel in both systems.
3,000-ton Unstreamlined Hyperfreighter v1.0 (TL10)
Copyright 2010 by Onno Meyer
This starship uses one obvious violation of physics as we know it (the
hyperdrive) and a few less obvious ones to allow interstellar travel and
adventures. The freighter is unstreamlined, so she uses orbital transfer
stations or shuttles at both ends of the flight.
The ship consists of the main hull and two capsules spinning at 0.4 G.
Each capsule has cabins for fifty passengers or crew, common spaces and
life support systems for the entire crew. The central hull contains the
bridge, engine rooms, reaction mass tanks and 1,200 tons of cargo. Twin
x-ray lasers provide some defense against meteorites or space pirates.
The fusion rockets use 15,000 gallons of reaction mass per hour. A
full load of provisions is $240,000.
Subassemblies: Body +9, two Pods +8.
Powertrain: Six 125,000-lb. vectored fusion rockets; 7,500-ton
hyperdrive; two 1,000-kW RTGs; two 50,000-kW fusion reactors; six
450,000,000-kWs rechargeable power cells; 72,000,000-kWs rechargeable
power cell.
Fuel: 200,000 gallons water.

3,000-ton Unstreamlined Hyperfreighter, Spaceships Version v1.0 (TL10^)

This starship uses one obvious violation of physics as we know it (the
hyperdrive) and a few less obvious ones to allow interstellar travel and
adventures. The freighter is unstreamlined, so she uses orbital transfer
stations or shuttles at both ends of the flight.
The ship consists of the main hull and two capsules spinning at 0.15
G. Each capsule has cabins for fifty passengers or crew, common spaces
and life support systems. The central hull contains the bridge, engine
rooms, reaction mass tanks and 1,040 tons of cargo. Two 30MJ UV lasers
provide some defense against meteorites or space pirates.
The freighter has a 3,000-ton (SM+9) unstreamlined hull with spin
gravity.
Systems Table
Front Hull System
[1] Nanocomposite Armor (dDR 30).
[2-3] Habitat (15 cabins, 1 bar, 2 automed sickbay, 1 minifac
each).
[4] Habitat (20 cabins).
[5] Cargo (150 tons capacity).
[6!] Tertiary Battery (two fixed mounts with 30MJ UV Lasers, 140
tons cargo).
[core] Control Room (C8 computer, comm/sensor 8, and 6 control
stations).
Central Hull System
[1] Nanocomposite Armor (dDR 30).
[2-6] Cargo (150 tons capacity each).
Rear Hull System
[1] Nanocomposite Armor (dDR 30).
[2] Fusion Torch (0.5 G acceleration).
[3-5] Fuel Tank (150 tons of hydrogen providing 15 mps each).
[6!] Stardrive Engine (FTL-1).
[core] Fusion Reactor (provides two power points).
The freighter needs six bridge crew and four engine room technicians
per shift, and a total of ten to twenty service crew on longer flights.
