I think his 'maintenance' question in GURPS will boil down to the cost.

In GURPS maintenance is proportional to the inverse sqrt of the cost.

For a TL8 1000kW "patrol boat" (from the tables on VE32):

 AMT lbs $ name
15k 5010 50k screw
12k 1020 10k light screw
20k 4080 80k ducted prop
20k 1020 40k hydrojet

From this, the component with the lightest maintenance is the light screw. A Hydrojet will have slightly less maintenance.

(Note that volume is also proportional to weight (cf=lbs/50 to be exact).)

(note that at TL8 the MHD are completely silent... a good characteristic for a patrol craft -- see VE32)

Thinking about it, if matching "standard" screw Aquatic Motive Thrust is the goal, then reverse engineer it from AMT 15k: (kW is dependent on AMT, and weight on kW, and $ on weight...)

 kW lbs $ name
1000 5010 50k screw (baseline)
1250 1270 13k light screw
0750 3080 62k ducted prop
0750 0770 31k hydrojet

Thus for the same /thrust/, the hydrojet is much lighter and compact (6x) (saving 100cf! - five passenger seats/half a car), and about half the cost.
