This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

Subcarrier v1.0 (TL6)
  Copyright 2010 by Onno Meyer

Historical submersible aircraft carriers never got beyond a few scout
floatplanes on large fleet submarines. The technical problems of sealed
hangars and lifts keep the Subcarrier in the realm of pulp fiction, and
the less realistic alternate history scenarios.
This Subcarrier is roughly the size of a WWII escort carrier, with a
300' flight deck and 25 to 30 aircraft. All planes must be launched or
stowed in the hangar before the Subcarrier can dive, which sets a firm
limit on the number and size of aircraft. Unlike conventional carriers,
she has islands on either side of the flight deck.
The carrier has two steam catapults, and she will turn into the wind
at 25 knots to launch fully loaded planes. The aviation fuel and bombs
last for one sharp battle, with a little left over for patrolling.
At 5 knots, the batteries last for 48 hours. The top submerged speed
of 16 knots can be maintained for a mere 105 minutes. Most likely, she
will launch a strike and then dive to evade the enemy counterstrike.
The turbines burn 1,800 gallons of diesel per hour at 21 mph routine
speed, the auxiliary generator burns another 8 gallons. A full load of
fuel, 40mm ammunition, and provisions is $336,000.
