How much of the cute, playful appearance of R2-D2 was due to the
acting and beeps, and how much was due to the lack of arms (hard
to take a disarmed robot seriously) and short size?

Can you think of serious little robots? There was Simon from
Captain Future, not exactly a robot but close enough.

But there is something else besides size. Consider Gort and Robby
the Robot. I don't think I could take Robby seriously as a CO, but
perhaps Gort.

For that matter, humanoid robots can be too cute, too. Number Six
or Rommie might make men drool, but do they make men obey?
