KITT would be an example for a robot without a "face" and i always found him to be the better lead actor. So i don't think a "face" is really that important.
I also don't think drool factor has actually that much effect on command ability. In a RL situation i have seen a woman with plenty of drool factor and flirteous behaviour to quite successfully lead.
And once you throw in some effective sanctions, a leader can impose on bad underlings (something that was not there in the RL example above), then i guess a pink fluffy toy-kitten "face" would not be an automatic desaster.
