The 'red Martians' have lived the last several thousand years with a certain mindset instilled them. It's not a pleasant one ... Yes, at least short term. Before destroying the gate on Madagascar (actually it as well as it's counterpart on Mars), the team went through and did some recon, including taking photos of giant launch rails being built. They were able to deal with the gravity and atmosphere reasonably well.
