Her capabilities range from basic astrographical surveys to the first contact with other civilizations. The hull is a 100m sphere, studded with sensor arrays, hatches, and the thruster projection heads. Her bridge, medical facilities, and crew quarters are protected near the center of the ship. The cargo holds and hangars are on the lower decks, while sensors and laboratories fill the upper sections. She is armed with a dozen gamma-ray lasers for point defense, and she has a large disintegrator, two tractor beams, and a paralysis beam. The Exploration Cruiser is no real warship, but less advanced civilizations may fail to see any difference ... The Cruiser has four hangars with 250-ton Lifeboats and a primary dock for perhaps 29,000 tons of subcraft. A typical mix includes two or three Cutters, an Aquashuttle, a dozen Surface Crawlers, and a variety of Base Modules and Landers. The permanent crew are ten bridge officers and several hundred robots. They are augmented by up to 240 mission specialists, from scientists to small craft crew.
