Hello Eric, I've read His Majesty's Dragon, and I don't think there are enough nuts and bolts for a consistent Vehicles writeup. Or rather, there are plenty of nuts and bolts, but they are social nuts and bolts, not technical ones. Mrs. Novik gives us flying creatures in the 50-ton range, which can carry several times their own weight, it seems. The Ballantine/Del Rey edition has an appendix which looks like a retcon of sizes and weights, with gas cells providing extra lift, but the text doesn't give the look and feel of an organic blimp with auxiliary wings ...
It is not clear to me how much takeoff run is required. It is mentioned that Temeraire is special in his ability to hover in midair, but ships of the line could carry rafts to build a landing platform for dragons half as long as a ship. Not much takeoff run, then. The dragon transports seem to be either floating rest and food bases or shore-to-shore transport for a few dragons.
