This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml Onno Meyer, 2013-03-04
Submersible Steam Torpedo Ram v1.0 (TL5) Copyright 2013 by Onno Meyer Her Majesty's steam rams protect the ports to safeguard the essential trade and commerce of the Empire. Beneath the waves, they are safe from storms and shellfire alike, and free to strike terror into the heart of any invader who dares to cross the Channel. On the surface, the ram reminds many observers of a swordfish. She has a sharp steel prow, and two hatches for locomotive torpedoes are mounted where the eyes would be. Two lower tubes are hidden under the water. The funnel stands in place of the dorsal fin. Inside, most visitors are dismayed by the constant din and the smell. A maze of pipes and valves covers every bulkhead. The bow contains the torpedo room, where the seamen live. The captain and the officers have individual cabins near the pilot house, and the stern is filled by the steam engine, the boiler rooms, the batteries, the electric motor, and the coal bunkers. The batteries last for 92 nautical miles at 3.9 knots, or 16 miles at the top speed of 12 knots. On the surface, the steam engine burns 5 tons of coal per hour at routine speed. A full load of torpedoes, fuel, and provisions is $146,800. Subassemblies: Body +8. Powertrain: 12,000-kW screw propeller; 4,000-kW triple expansion steam engine; 60,000,000-kWs lead-acid batteries.
