Hello everybody, I've been thinking about 3E TL9 space industry. How would one build a solar power sat?
The solar cells are clear. A square kilometre gives 860 MW at 1 AU from the sun. With the panel a couple thousand tons and 323 billion $, plus the core with thrusters and the transmitter. But how about the power transmitter? VE87 says to take a laser or maser. Microwave sounds right, but a 430,000-kJ disruptor with extreme range gets a mere 87,000 yards 1/2D, or 50 miles. Sixteen square kilometres deliver 6.88 GW at 200 miles, or 3.44 GW at 600 miles. A laser would have 655 miles range from just one square kilometre. But I guess the price is the killer.
