I had found that some of my earlier ships had been "unbalanced" -- not enough accel and FTL speed for the TL, for example. So I decided to start at an early interstellar tech level and to get into an arms race with myself. It has something to do with comparing GURPS 3E and 4E, too. 3E has more TLs, 4E has more options within the TLs.
